Words have the power to Heal, Save and Kill

It is sometimes hard to imagine for most of us how powerful the tongue can be. We speak daily and don't always mean what we say, as our tongues sound out Truth, Lies, Good and Bad words.

Bible scripture is full of lessons and warnings concerning that double edged sword that sits behind your teeth. This is for very good reason as we will explain, by diving deep into the Word, and into how we live our lives.

 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:
Psalms 12:3

 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
Isaiah 54:17

 Just two of many examples in Scripture on minding your tongue, and knowing the power of it. The words of our tongue can be hateful or loving, good or evil, but in all cases they come from the abundance of the heart. Jesus Christ is the eternal Word (John1:1), the King James Bible is the Word. Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh; "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth" (John 1:14).

How important are words? Lets look at John 12:44-50 where Jesus reveals that His words give us everlasting life;

Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

John 12:44-50

 The King James 1611 Bible also has an abundance of numeric codes.

In this passage of Scripture there are seven references to the current  word Jesus speaks, namely; "word(s)", "say" and "speak." "Spoken' refers to the past and so is not included.

When Jesus cried out to the people who stood before him, He referenced these seven times. So let us consider the references to (word(s), say, speak):
 (Word(s), say, speak) x 7 times.

The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

 Psalms 12:6

Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Luke 21:33

The Book of James tells us that the tongue is the biggest defiler of our bodies; it is a "little member" of the body which can put us on the course to hell;

Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

 James 3:5-8

Our words have a great effect on others.  Whether our words are motivated by love or hate, vengeance or envy, they will have an effect on the thoughts and feelings of others. In some cases they will affect the decisions people make. Thus our words can play a role in their free-will choices. Jesus said, that every idle word from the tongue would be brought to judgment. This is a serious warning to us;  that we should think before we speak, walking in the Holy Spirit and keeping a righteous tongue.

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

 Matthew 12:36

There are many moments in life where Satan's workers can get "a foot in the door" and lead you astray with your tongue. For example; when you get angry about something or someone. Or when you are verbally under attack or in an argument. To name a few. But when you lose control of your tongue it's YOU that's affected for the worse. Jesus told us that such words will defile you;

Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Matthew 15:17-20

 In the book of Psalms there is a lot of advice and warning concerning that little but mighty member of the body. It is vital to take heed and understand that you defile your body when you speak ill words, and that your body IS the temple of the Holy Spirit.

All the following verses of Psalms refer to the tongue:

 Psalms 52:2  Psalms 52:4 Psalms 57:4 Psalms 64:3 Psalms 64:8 Psalms 66:17 Psalms 68:23 Psalms 71:24 Psalms 73:9 Psalms 109:2 Psalms 119:172 Psalms 120:2 Psalms 120:3 Psalms 126:2 Psalms 137:6 Psalms 139:4 [9]

Bad words can open doorways for Satan to work on you, and it's not crazy to say; they can even invite unclean spirits to dwell in your temple, (your body).

Yes, this can happen and does, and that's why the Bible is also filled with examples of Jesus casting out devils from men and women. Casting them out (Deliverance) still applies in our time. If your tongue speaks evil it will attract evil spirits towards you.

For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

 Matthew 12:37

 Repentance

If we speak in a manner that either defiles us, or puts troubles on others; perhaps leading them the wrong way, we can repent of those words right away and ask for forgiveness. Whilst you're in the right mind-set, make it right with the other person(s) as soon as possible. And if they don't want to be reconciled you need not worry because you offered a chance for them to forgive. If they declined, it is between them and God. And, like all our actions, it will play a role in their judgment if they do not repent. So it is good to pray for them, as forgiveness can be one of the hardest things to give, but is so vital.

The words of the LORD are pure words:
as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

 Psalms 12:6

 Search the Heart

Words come from the Heart, so look into your own heart. Ask Jesus to help you with your heart through prayer. We were given a very good prayer in the Bible to ask for help with matters of the heart:

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalms 139:23-24

Make no  mistake; the Bible is very much about the heart, just as it is about salvation through Jesus Christ. The Bible is a guidebook for life itself. If you want to keep your mouth from defiling your temple (body), consider these words of Jesus Christ recorded in the Gospel of Luke;

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Luke 6:45

In the Gospel of Luke Jesus gives a lot of truths and guidance concerning the heart. The Gospel of Matthew also provides understanding concerning the heart. For example, when Jesus is rebuking the Pharisee He reveals the state of their wicked hearts;

Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Matthew 15:7-9

Let's finish with more from Luke, where Jesus gives strong words and advice, all concerning matters of the heart, which in today's world can be hard changes to make, but with God, all things are possible!

This is Luke 6:27-45 (KJV 1611) The words of Jesus

"But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.

Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.

And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.  And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.  But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.  Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:  Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.

For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

And he spake a parable unto them,

Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?  The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.  And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.  For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh."

Judge yourself first and make righteous judgments of others.
Always look into your own heart first before you speak.
Repent of all bad and unrighteous words.

For when you stand before Jesus, every non-repented idle word shall be under judgment,
as well as all the good ones.

All glory to God our Father and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen
